Mirella Travertine & Walnut Pendant Large

The Mirella large is a cylindrical pendant with a shade cut from solid travertine and a walnut fitting above it. Travertine is a limestone formed in mineral springs, which is why the block is not uniform: it is layered, with bands of warm beige running through paler and darker mineral deposits, and it is porous, with small open cavities left where gas escaped as the stone formed. Cutting a cylinder out of that block exposes all of it at once, so the outer wall shows the banding as horizontal lines around the shade and the pores as scattered pits you can feel with a fingertip. The wall thickness gives the piece its mass, and the open bottom edge shows the full section of stone. Because the shade is closed at the top and open below, the light goes one direction only: a warm, soft-edged column falling straight down. The walnut fitting caps the cylinder in dark brown, a deliberate contrast against the pale mineral surface, and it is the part that keeps the pendant from reading as a plain stone tube. Under the lamp the inside wall of the shade picks up a warm glow, so the fixture has a lit interior as well as a lit floor.

A downward cylinder is table lighting. Over a dining table, hung so the bottom edge sits around seventy centimetres above the surface, Mirella lays a defined circle of warm light across the middle of the table and lets the room fall back around it. That separation is what makes a table feel like the centre of an evening, and it is the reason a directed shade is better here than a diffusing globe, which lights the ceiling and the chairs equally. Over a kitchen island it delivers the same focused pool onto the worktop, bright where you cut and read, without washing the cabinet fronts. In a living room, dropped low beside a sofa or over a side table, it becomes a defined reading spot rather than general light. On a long table the large size can stand alone in the centre, or two can be spaced along the length. The material decides the mood: beige stone with visible pores next to oak, wool, linen and plaster, warm rather than sharp, and honed so it never throws a hard reflection. Hang it lower than instinct suggests, because a table pendant that clears every sightline is usually too high to do its job.

Mirella exists in several sizes and bundles, and the large single is the version to choose when one pendant has to carry the table on its own. Solid travertine is the reason: at this size the shade has real presence, and the mineral surface holds up to being looked at from a metre away in a way a printed stone finish does not. Every shade is sawn from a different part of the seam, so the banding may run tight or loose, one piece may show a large open void near the rim and another almost none, and the beige may lean cream or grey. That variation is the character of the material, not a flaw in the batch. The walnut fitting is a small part with a large effect, warming the top of the fixture and tying it to a wooden table or floor. Practically, it arrives complete with a light source and a ceiling plate, so there is nothing to source separately before it goes up.
