Mirella Travertine & Oak Pendant Set of 2

This Mirella set contains two cylindrical pendants, each with a shade cut from solid travertine and an oak fitting at the top. Travertine forms in mineral springs, so the stone is banded and porous: warm beige bodies crossed by paler and darker sedimentary layers, with small open cavities scattered through them. Turning a cylinder from that material exposes the whole structure, so the outer wall carries the banding as lines running around the shade and the pores as small pits with real depth, and the open lower edge shows the full wall thickness. Oak sets a different contrast than walnut does: it is pale, open-grained and stays light, so the top of each pendant reads as a soft line rather than a dark cap, and the whole fixture holds one warm tonal range from stone to wood. Each shade is closed above and open below, which sends a warm, soft-edged column of light straight down and keeps the source hidden from anyone standing next to it. Seen from underneath, the inner wall of the stone glows warm around the lamp, and the pores on the inside face show as small dark points inside that glow. The two pendants are supplied complete with their own light sources and ceiling plates, so a pair goes up in a single installation rather than in two rounds of ordering and fitting.

Two pendants exist for surfaces that one cannot cover. A kitchen island longer than a metre and a half is lit badly by a single central fixture, because the ends of the working surface fall into the shadow of whoever stands at it; two shades spaced evenly along the length put light where you actually chop, plate and read, and the pools overlap enough that there is no dark middle. The same applies over a dining table for six, where a pair keeps every place setting lit instead of only the centre. Spacing is simple: divide the length into three and hang one pendant at each of the two inner points, with the bottom edges about seventy centimetres above the surface. The two can also be split between rooms, one over a breakfast counter and one over a side table, when the connection between two areas of an open-plan floor needs to be made visually. Oak and beige travertine sit comfortably in exactly the kind of interior this suits: pale timber floors, plaster or clay walls, linen, wool and matt cabinet fronts. Nothing in the fixture is glossy, so a row of two does not turn into a row of reflections when daylight comes across the room.

The set is the sensible way to buy this fixture, because two pendants over one surface should relate to each other and shades bought months apart will not come from the same run. Both cylinders in a set are cut from the same production batch, so the tonal range matches, while the detail still varies the way real stone does: one may show a broad pale band, the other a tighter grain or a larger open pore near the rim. That is a pair, not a matched product, and it is the difference between stone and a printed finish. The oak version is worth choosing deliberately. Walnut gives contrast, oak gives continuity, so in a kitchen with light timber fronts or a pale floor the oak fitting lets the pendants sit into the room rather than punctuate it. Both pendants arrive complete with light sources and ceiling plates, which means one order and one installation visit rather than a second round of parts. It suits kitchens with a real working island, dining rooms with a long table, and open-plan interiors in Japandi, Scandinavian or warm minimal style. If you are already committed to one Mirella, this is how you finish the run.
