Gerini Travertine & Oak Wall Light

Gerini is a wall light made of two clear shapes: a cylinder of travertine and the flat rectangular backplate that carries it. The cylinder is the light, the plate is the frame, and the contrast between them is the whole design. Travertine is a porous natural stone, warm beige and laid down in bands, and on a small cylinder that banding runs around the body so a seam can be followed from one side to the other. The pores are left open, which keeps the surface matte and slightly rough and stops the stone from ever looking like a plastic imitation. Because the walls are opaque, light escapes only at the top and bottom of the cylinder, and that is what produces the effect the piece is really built around: two warm cones on the wall, one washing up, one washing down, meeting the plate in the middle. On a textured wall those cones rake across the surface and make plaster, brick or lime paint visible in a way flat lighting never does. The rectangular backplate sits behind, straight-edged and modern, giving the round stone something hard to push against and lending the fixture a sculptural quality when it is off. Vertical wall washing is a corridor technique, so a hallway is the first place to put Gerini. Mounted at roughly chest to shoulder height in a run, the paired cones stack down the length of the wall and turn a blank corridor into a rhythm of light and shadow, without a single fixture hanging into the walking space. It is the least intrusive way to light a narrow passage properly. Beside a bed the fixture takes over from a table lamp: mounted on the wall it leaves the nightstand clear, the downward cone falls onto the surface where a book or a phone sits, and the upward cone keeps the wall above from going black so the corner of the room stays soft rather than cave-like. In a living room it works as evening light, one on each side of a fireplace, along the wall behind a sofa, or flanking a doorway, in each case adding a warm layer at eye level that lets you turn the ceiling light off entirely. It also suits a stairwell, where the up-and-down throw follows the direction of travel. Because the beam is shaped rather than general, it is a light for atmosphere and orientation rather than for filling a room.

What makes Gerini worth choosing over the many small sconces on the market is that the stone is real and the geometry is honest. The cylinder is solid travertine with a genuine surface, so each piece has its own banding and pore pattern, and a pair mounted either side of a bed will differ slightly, which is the mark of natural material rather than a manufacturing fault. The straight backplate keeps the fixture firmly modern, so this is not a rustic lamp: the combination reads as contemporary design that happens to use an ancient material.
