Gerini Travertine Pendant Light Set of 3

Gerini is a three piece pendant set with shades cut from solid travertine and held in a walnut fitting. Each shade is compact, either a round profile of 65 millimetres diameter by 185 millimetres high or a square section of 65 by 65 by 185 millimetres, which puts it firmly in the slim column category rather than the shade category. Travertine is a natural stone formed in mineral springs, and its warm beige ground is crossed by the fine horizontal layering that formed as the deposit built up, with open pores scattered across the face. Because the material is solid through, the bottom edge shows the same layers in section and the piece has the weight of stone rather than the lightness of a shell. Walnut at the fitting brings a deep brown with a straight, close grain, and that darker timber against pale stone is a sharper contrast than the more common oak pairing, which keeps the top of each pendant from disappearing into a white ceiling. The case for buying three at once is the same as with any natural stone: colour and pore density drift between quarrying runs, and three shades sourced together stay within one family while keeping the individual variation that makes stone worth hanging in the first place. The choice between round and square profiles is worth thinking about. The round column is softer and reads almost as a piece of hardware, while the square section catches light on its four flat faces at different intensities and gives a more graphic, architectural result on the same ceiling. Both come with the walnut fitting, and both throw the same tight warm column. Compared with a large single pendant over a table, a run of three is more forgiving of a room that is not perfectly symmetrical, easier to balance against a long dining surface, and easier to live with when the table is used for work as well as meals.
